The Gaslight Anthem is four dudes from New Jersey who know a thing or five about making the place they call home proud. To the delight of both those who hail from the Garden State and those who don’t, the band (comprised of Brian Fallon, Benny Horowitz, Alex Levine and Alex Rosamilla) has been  churning out consistent, quality rock ‘n’ roll since the release of their 2007 debut, Sink or Swim.

The '59 SoundThe band gained considerable praise for their debut, but things really picked up with the release of their next two records, The ’59 Sound and American Slang. Both albums found the boys nailing down their sound, which meshes the pop-punk aesthetics of bands like Against Me! and the American desire for lost youth and faded lovers made most famous by none other than Bruce Springsteen.

In 2012, Handwrittenthe Gaslight Anthem released their fourth—and arguably best—record, the angst-ridden Handwritten. And now, they look to cement their status as one of the hardest working bands in the game by releasing a follow-up, Get Hurt, just two years later. Get Hurt‘s mid-August release date couldn’t be a more proper one, as the band’s heart-tugging lyrics are sure to soothe the burn from your summer-romance fall-out; if you can’t beat ’em, might as well join ’em.

FKA Twigs may have earned her name from the way heThe xxr bones crack and pop, but she’s anything but old. The 26 year old Brit, born Tahlia Barnett, is set to release her debut longplay, the aptly titled LP1, next week. Though she originally moved to London to be a dancer, she ultimately quit the profession to write and record her own music. Her first products, the also-aptly-titled EP1 and EP2, showed her honing her own brand of dark, seductive R&B.

LP1 picks uGoodiesp properly where her two EPs left off. Its two pre-released singles, “Pendulum” and “Two Weeks,” have both earned Pitchfork Media’s “Best New Track” stamp of approval. They’re intriguing, ear-pleasing pieces of music, reminiscent of the vocal stylings of Ciara and Janet Jackson and the minimalistic intimacy of label-mates The xx.

LP1 comes out next week on Young Turks. It’s sure to add a nice layer of zesty, fluid R&B to a label already brimming with budding talent.

Synthpop sensation La Roux is releasing their long-awaited sophomore album next week, entitled Trouble in Paradise. Singer and frontwoman Elly Jackson has taken the reigns on the new album after a recent split with longtime creative partner and producer Ben Langmaid.

La RouxLa Roux has enjoyed success since the late 2000s. Their self-titled album, an electrically-fueled synthesizer dance pop masterpiece, earned the group a Grammy Award in 2011 for Best Electronic/Dance Album. The band began to amass a global audience as they toured the world and made television appearances throughout America.

My Beautiful Dark Twisted FantasyOther artists quickly took notice of Elly Jackson’s talent and unique persona. She provided vocals for several tracks on Kanye West’s 2010 mega-hit My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. After a two-year hiatus beginning in 2011, La Roux began the writing process for their second album. It was during this time that producer Ben Langmaid left the group, leaving Jackson as the main creative force.

Trouble in Paradise promises to live up to the expectations of it’s predecessor without relying on emulation. Jackson has stated that the new album has a “cheekier” sound than their debut smash, and that she herself will be playing more live instruments to create a fresher sound.

A music video for the first single, “Let Me Down Gently,” is available for viewing and is already generating a positive buzz for the new album. Check it out below!

Kayla: Hi guys, another album release is coming to Murfie on Tuesday, July 22nd. La Roux is coming out with Trouble in Paradise. La Roux is an electronic synth pop act, with mainly one person doing everything—Elly. Electronic music is really popular nowadays, but I’m glad to hear that this new album is going to incorporate some acoustic instruments in the mix, a fusion of old and new. Another thing to note is Elly, the main person in La Roux, has amazing hair, and you can see on the first album cover and this one too. She’s looking fabulous sitting on a car, so the whole image surrounding the music I think is really fitting. Especially with the name of the band, La Roux, which could be translated as “The Redhead.” So the new album comes out July 22nd. See if it lives up to the expectations. It’s on our pre-order page, murfie.com/preorder.

It’s hard to imagine that an artist who’s been covered by Bob Dylan, Iggy Pop, Emmylou Harris and Bruce Springsteen can remain off the radar, but that’s essentially how John Hiatt has spent his entire career.

Best of John HiattHiatt grew up in Indianapolis, where he learned to play the guitar at age 11 as a way to deal with growing pains. He moved to Nashville in his late teens and ended up landing a songwriting gig with the Tree-Music Publishing Company. In 1973 Three Dog Night recorded a track he wrote, “Sure As I’m Sittin’ Here,” and he subsequently signed a contract with Epic Records.

Things wereBring the Family just beginning to look up for John, yet he was dropped from Epic a few years later when his albums failed to chart. After a brief stint with Geffen Records, he finally caught a break in 1987 with Bring the Family and his biggest hit, “Have a Little Faith in Me.” Hiatt continued to harbor critical success during his stay with A&M Records, but he couldn’t match the level of commercial success he found with Bring the Family.

6146-largeThroughout the 90’s, Hiatt continued to perfect his storytelling technique, becoming a masterful lyricist in the process. He also honed a sound that was distinctly American, falling somewhere in between new-wave, country and rock. In 1995 he received his first Grammy nomination for Walk On, and in 2002 he contributed a handful of track’s to the Disney film Country Bears.

Hiatt is set to release his 22nd album, Terms of My Surrender, next week. The record marks a minor departure from his recent country sound, opting instead for something a little more blues influenced. No matter the genre of music, however, it’s sure to be nothing but another worthy album from a well-traveled cult hero.

When it comes to American metal bands, few have been as influential or dedicated as Ministry. And while Al Jourgensen began the band as a synthpop outfit in 1981, they quickly traded in their synthesizers for guitars and morphed into something a whole lot heavier.

psalm 69Ministry broke through into the mainstream in 1992 with the release of Psalm 69: The Way to Succeed and the Way to Suck Eggs . The record not only cemented the band’s place at the forefront of the industrial metal scene—but it also snagged them a spot at Lollapalooza that very same summer.

While Ministry dealt with steady lineup changes throughout the ‘90s and the early 2000s, they never stopped releasing records until 2008, when Jourgensen declared that the band was finished.

from beer to eternityYet just four short years later, Ministry rode again. Their latest live record, Last Tangle in Paris – Live 2012 was recorded during their 2012 reunion, and it shows the band playing old and new hits alike. It also happens to be one of the last Ministry performances of late guitarist Mike Scaccia’s career.

After Scaccia’s death, Jourgensen collected the band’s most recent recordings and churned them into 2013’s From Beer to Eternity, their final studio album. Last Tangle in Paris – Live 2012 is another last for the band, as Jourgensen has declared that there won’t be another Ministry live album.

So whether you’re a diehard metal fan or simply someone looking for a spot to dive into a well-established band’s discography, Last Tangle in Paris – Live 2012 is an essential record to add to your collection.

Ed Sheeran‘s first major album release, + (pronounced “plus”), was one of the best-selling debut albums in the UK. 125391-largeSheeran had previously released 5 EPs himself, but his commercial breakthrough with + in 2011 quickly got him international acclaim, along with the attention of seasoned musicians like Elton John and Jamie Foxx. Now with his second studio release on the close horizon, the buzz is picking up again, and critics and fans alike are expecting another round of fun, soulful pop that’s enjoyable to listen to.

Wish You Were HereIn 2012, Sheeran kept the momentum going by touring with indie rock aficionados Snow Patrol. He also scored a spot at the 2012 Summer Olympics closing ceremony, where he performed a cover of the classic Pink Floyd song “Wish You Were Here.”

125267-largeA strength of Sheeran’s is his songwriting. Not just for his own music, but for his peers in the music industry as well. In 2013, he toured with Taylor Swift, one of America’s most popular pop country stars, and made a co-writing contribution to her wildly successful album Red. He’s also lent a hand writing with UK superstars One Direction.

The HobbitRecently, Sheeran wrote and recorded a song for the film The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, called “I See Fire”. It plays during the credits, and also appears on the soundtrack. With so many great experiences under his belt, Sheeran’s upcoming album x (pronounced “multiply”) is sure to keep him on the right track.

Kayla: “Hey guys, another album release is coming to Murfie on Monday, June 23rd: Ed Sheeran‘s new album ‘Multiply’, represented like an ‘x‘. I think that Ed has a lot going for him. He’s really young, and he’s also got a great funny personality that really comes through in his music videos and his social media presence. So this new album has Pharrell Williams as a producer. Pharrell also appears on the song ‘Sing’, with the music video already up on YouTube. Some things that Ed has done in the past that I really like: He contributed a song to The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug soundtrack, it’s called ‘I See Fire’ and it plays during the credits. It’s a beautiful song which really showcases Ed’s great songwriting skills. Also, I really enjoy the music video for ‘Drunk’ off of his last album, because it features a cat as one of the stars in the video. I think it’s hilarious and very well done. So the new album comes out June 23rd, you can check it out for yourself—it’s on our pre-order page, murfie.com/preorder.”
